In-Person Photography Mentorship

In-Person Mentoring with Kayleigh: Building Camera Confidence Through Light, Composition & Creativity

This mentoring session with Kayleigh was part of the early launch of my 1-2-1 photography mentoring, designed to help beginners feel more confident using their camera in a calm, hands-on way. We spent the afternoon working with natural light, composition, and simple camera settings, focusing on moving beyond the familiar “shoot and hope for the best” approach

Getting Comfortable With the Camera

We started with the basics, how to set up the camera, switching from Auto to Aperture Priority (AV mode), and understanding how aperture affects depth of field and light. Once Kayleigh learned how to use exposure compensation to brighten or darken her images, her confidence jumped instantly.

Seeing Light Differently

A huge breakthrough came from simply turning around. When the light fell onto the trees instead of behind them, the entire scene shifted. She saw how natural light shapes an image far more than the settings do.

Photography mentoring isn’t about memorising settings, it’s about learning to see.

Composition & Perspective

Kayleigh quickly picked up concepts such as leading lines, framing, vertical vs. horizontal shooting, and creating breathing room around subjects. She became noticeably more intentional with each shot.

But the real magic happened when I introduced her to using Zoom creatively.

The Zoom Trick That Changed Everything

Instead of shooting wide and close, I had her zoom to 105mm and step far back. The background compressed, the clouds became dramatic, and the oak tree suddenly looked atmospheric and powerful.

“That’s my favourite shot!”

She said immediately.

She discovered how a tiny change in distance and focal length can completely transform an image.

Playing With Angles

Dropping the camera closer to the ground opened up new perspectives, reflections, and softer compositions. These minor adjustments are the kind that beginners rarely think of, and exactly why hands-on mentoring accelerates learning so quickly.

Her Takeaway From the Day

At the end, Kayleigh shared:

“Now I know exactly what to look for. Learning about light, zooming, and perspective was so helpful. I feel confident to go out and experiment.”

This is the heart of why I offer photography mentoring: to help you understand your camera, see the world differently, and create images with intention instead of guesswork.

Next Steps

I encouraged her to review the images on her computer and start experimenting with editing in Lightroom or Capture One. We’ll explore that more in her next session.
